Pranava Mantra
The basic mantra that always thought in hinduism is the pranava mantra which is Oṃ, ॐ or we usually pronounce it as Om or Aum. Om is consider as universal mantra and key for all mantras. The experience of this invocation of this pranava mantra cannot be describe by mere words. It's like can you explain the source of all sounds. You may use your own poetic language to describe but it will never be the same as the truth. One may try to understand the symbol of the pranava mantra but to discover the truth itself it's better to learn a proper way from a master or Guru in order to recite this pranava mantra and get initiated by him. The meaning and understanding of this symbol can be found in any books or in internet also but to do the practice daily need a mind which can commit daily.
So, the reality is your effort of practice of pranava mantra in daily life.
The Pranava Mantra Sadhana
Just simple as that, daily chant the mantra while concentrating on your breath. Use japa mala or you may use the picture of the Om in any version you like to concentrate upon. Okay, there two techniques that can be used and why?
Nirguna Pranava Sadhana- When chanting the "Aum" mantra, just aware of the flowing of your breath. Don't try to control your breath but simply chant internally and aware of your breath. Why breath? This is because your breath is the only involuntary actions that is near to the reality or divine. This technique had been used by many sage, rishi or enlightend soul. So, there are many version of sadhanas regarding this technique but the best is to get it from a Master or Guru because they know your state well and which suits you. But not bad in trying in this method for now because eventually any effort you put with sincere heart will leads you to the path.
Saguna Pranava Sadhana- Don't worry after all the name and method is changed according to different capability of concentration. Some may love form and used to it. So, the alternate is to use a yantra or a image as a concentration device. Chant "Aum" by focus on Om image according to your culture like (Devanagari: ॐ, Kannada: ಓಂ, Tamil: ௐ, Malayalam: ഓം, Telugu: ఓం, Bengali: ওঁ, Odia : ଓଁ or ଓଁ). See which suits you more and chant this mantra. Eventually the object of concentration will also receive it's own energy.
